Personal data
Personal data contain specific information about the personal or material circumstances of an identified or identifiable natural person. That includes such information as your correct name, address, telephone number and birth date. Information that cannot be directly associated with your actual identity, such as the average time you spend visiting a given website or how frequently you visit it, is not considered personal data.
Gathering and processing of personal data
Generally you do not need to provide personal data in order to use the VGN GmbH website. We record personal data only if, and only to the extent that, you knowingly provide those data to us yourself – for example in connection with a question about a service, or for a survey, competition or request for information.
VGN GmbH would like to remind you that any data transfer over the Internet (for example, when communicating by email) may be subject to security vulnerabilities. Data cannot be protected absolutely against all access by third parties.
Purpose and legal basis of use
VGN GmbH will use the personal data you provide to fulfil your requests and requirements – i.e., as a rule, to carry out a contract with you, or to answer a question you have sent us. If processing is based on your consent, your personal data will be processed only for the specified purpose. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. We will also process your personal data in order to serve legally defined legitimate interests (for example, for the technical administration of the website). We will furthermore use your data to comply with our legal and public obligations (for example, under the German Commercial Code and the Tax Code).
Disclosure of personal data
Your personal data will not be disclosed, sold or otherwise transmitted to third parties unless this is necessary for the purpose of a contract with you, you have expressly given your consent, or we are required to do so by law.
Collection of general information
When you use our website, as a matter of standard practice VGN GmbH’s web servers temporarily store the requesting computer’s connection data, the web pages you visit on the VGN GmbH portal, the date and duration of your visit, the identifying data for the type of browser and operating system you use, and the website from which you connected to the portal.
Each data set comprises:
- The web page from which the file was requested
- The name of the file
- The date and time of the request
- The volume of data transmitted
- The access status (e.g., file sent, file not found)
- A description of the type of web browser and operating system used
These data are collected solely for statistical purposes in order to optimise our website further. They will not be disclosed to third parties, even in excerpts.
Cookies
VGN GmbH uses cookies in some areas of this website. These serve to make our site more user-friendly and more efficient.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are downloaded to your computer and stored by your browser. They do not damage your computer and do not contain viruses. Cookies may contain personal data.
We distinguish between cookies that are essential in order for the website to function technically, and optional cookies.
You can generally use vgn.de without cookies that do not serve for technical purposes. This means that you can set your browser to prevent tracking with cookies (Do Not Track, Tracking Protection List, etc.) or set it not to accept cookies from third parties.
We also recommend that you should regularly check and delete any cookies stored by your browser that you are not certain you want. But please note that if you delete all cookies, you will also delete any opt-out cookies you may have set, so that you will have to re-declare any opt-out choices you have made. This may also delete cookies you have saved for your history or favourites, so that you may no longer be able to access such data.
Cookies that are essential for using the site
Session cookies
Most of the cookies used on our websites are “session” cookies. They are stored only for the length of your visit, and are deleted automatically as soon as you close your browser.
We set session cookies, for example, when providing timetable information, so that we can offer certain features or functions, such as finding service that is earlier or later than a connection you have already made, or providing further information about a connection. These cookies are deleted automatically once you close your browser.
Cookies that are not essential for using the site (optional cookies)
Function cookies
We want you to be able to make an informed decision whether to use cookies that are not essential to the website’s technical functions. Please note that if you decline cookies that are not essential, you may not be able to use all functions on our site.
Journey plan history
Our server stores the transport stops you input, together with important points and addresses for departures and destinations, and we link these data to a unique ID. This ID is also stored on your device as a cookie. Our server uses this ID to identify you the next time you visit, and in the connection information and departure monitor, it provides you with a history that shows the stops you had previously stored, along with important points or addresses for departures and destinations. Only a certain number of points are stored for each ID, so that older entries are replaced by newer ones.
Favourites in your journey plan
You can “favourite” entries in your history so that these stops, important points or addresses are permanently saved and protected from being overwritten. The data will be stored in the same way and with the same scope as your history.
Data for history and favourites that are stored on our server are automatically deleted if they have not been accessed within the past six months.
Our server stores only those stops, important points and addresses for connections and departures that you input. We do not store any relationships or time references that might make it possible to prepare a movement profile.
Piwik
Using Piwik
This website uses Piwik, an open source software for the statistical analysis of visitor accesses.
Piwik uses “cookies,” text files that are stored on your computer that make it possible to analyse your use of the website. The information that the cookie generates about your use of this website is stored on the server of VGN GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany, and is not disclosed to third parties.
You can set your browser software to prevent cookies from being accepted. But VGN GmbH would like to remind you that in that case, you may not be able to use all features of this website.
In light of the debate concerning the use of analytical tools with complete IP addresses, VGN GmbH would like you to know that this website uses Piwik with the “_anonymizeIp()” extension, and thus IP addresses are processed only in abbreviated form, so that there is no way to relate them directly with any individual.
Security
We have taken technical and administrative precautions to protect your personal data against loss, destruction, manipulation and unauthorised access. All of our employees and the service providers who work for us are under an obligation to comply with the applicable data privacy laws.
Whenever we gather and process personal data, they are encrypted before being transmitted. In other words, your data cannot be abused by third parties. Our security precautions undergo a continuous process of improvement in this respect, and our data privacy policies are revised regularly. Please be sure you have the latest version.
Rights of data subjects Please feel free to contact us at any time if you would like further information about what personal data we have stored concerning you (right of access, Art. 15 GDPR) or if you wish for those data to be rectified (Art. 16 GDPR) or erased (Art. 17 GDPR). You also have the right to restrict processing of your data (Art. 18 GDPR), a right to object to their processing (Art. 21 GDPR) and a right to data portability (Art. 20 GDPR).
In these cases, please feel free to contact us directly.
Changes in this data privacy policy
We reserve the right to change our data privacy policy if new technologies make such changes necessary. Please be sure you have the latest version. In the event of fundamental changes to this data privacy policy, we will announce such changes on our website.
